The London Tree and Woodland Framework Consultation Document was launched at Wellington Arch in July 2004.
The Framework is supported by the London Woodland Advisory Group which includes Government Office for London, Greater London Authority and Forestry Commission. It encourages the inclusion of green spaces in new developments which will provide an attractive environment for business, leisure and tourism and improve our physical heath and well-being, as well as the increased management of our existing woodlands.
To mark the occasion Lord Clark, chair of the Forestry Commission, was joined by Marion Kerr, Head of GOL’s Central Unit, Honor Chapman, Chair of the London Development Agency, and Professor David Goode, representing the Greater London Authority, to plant an oak tree in the grounds of Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner.
There are over seven million trees in Greater London, which need to be carefully managed, and the Framework provides a strategic direction for maintaining and enhancing this valuable resource.
The Framework will guide the planting of the right tree in the right place. It encourages checking if there is a history of planting certain species in an area and choosing areas for planting that are accessible to Londoners.
Other objectives include:
- Promoting the important contribution of trees and woodlands to London’s sustainable development and regeneration.
- Safeguarding and improving the current management of London’s existing woodland.
- Increasing Londoners’ awareness and understanding of their tree and woodland resource.
Marion Kerr, Head of GOL’s Central Unit, said:
“The London Trees and Woodland Framework will benefit London and its development as a world class city, not only by enhancing the environment, but also by improving the accessibility of the capital’s woodlands and promoting the benefits of trees and woodlands to the physical health and well-being of Londoners.”
Consultation will be for a three month period until 31 October 2004.
