Newham’s Community Food Enterprise helps residents improve their diet
Funded by GOL through the West Ham and Plaistow New Deal for Communities, Newham’s Community Food Enterprise aims to reduce food poverty by improving the access and availability of healthy foods.
The project ensures that high quality fresh fruit and vegetables are sold at affordable prices. Their holistic approach helps community cohesion by encouraging local people to take an active role in health and regeneration issues in the borough.
Kathy, a local resident and mother of two, said:
“The Community Food Enterprise provides healthy food at cheap prices and is a big help to families on low budgets.”
Community Food aids the delivery of government health initiatives such as Five-a-Day on the ground. Their key operations include:
Breakfast Clubs
Community Food buys and delivers groceries to schools, ensuring that pupils begin each school day with a nutritious meal.
Fruit Delivery Scheme
Following on from the Government’s National School Fruit Scheme aimed at 4-6 year olds, it ensures that all 7-11 year olds continue to receive a fresh piece of fruit each school day.
Social Food Outlets
The project’s Social Food Outlets, mainly based in community schools, sell fresh produce to parents at the end of the school day.
Mobile Food Store
The Mobile Food Store stops at selected points throughout Newham selling grocery provisions to residents unable to access the Food Outlets.
