On Sunday 10 October 2004 the first ever  ‘Crime is Not a Game’ youth summit got off to a flying start at Ocean in Hackney.

Ocean Rising Tide and Eastside Records presented the event in conjunction with Hackney Community Safety Team and Hackney Drug Action, both of which are funded by GOL.

The summit was the culmination of a three-month promotional campaign aimed at schools, youth clubs, sports centres and performing arts centres. GOL provided much needed funding with a grant of £5,000 as well as sending two members of staff down for the event to work alongside the young people in the Crime Game workshops.

Loick & Davinah, The WINNERS of Search For A Star

An upbeat and vibrant pace to the day’s events was maintained thanks to hosts Kat of Choice FM and MTV and Ras Kwame of BBC1xtra. Education spokespeople from the Black Police Association, Met Police, Hackney Community Safety Unit and Greater London Authority were on hand to advise on panel discussions covering topics such as Stop and Search and Youth Rights. But the highlight of the day was the Crime Game, which offered teams the opportunity to perform music, drama, song, MC-ing or poetry to solve a problem associated with street crime. A cash prize of £500 was awarded to the winner.

The evening showcase, featuring performances by a star studded list of celebrities, added excitement and helped to make the event a huge success. The stars included Wiley Shystie, Nathan, Klashnekoff, Demolition Man, Naila Boss and Jemma Fox. A fashion show and performances by winners of the ‘Search for a Star’ campaign rounded the evening off.
