Sustainable Development is Good News for Disadvantaged Londoners

*Quality of life and opportunities for Londoners are being strengthened thanks to £570 million in European Structural Funds which are bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the capital's disadvantaged communities.

The grants to businesses and individuals comes under three programmes called Objective 2, Objective 3, and Urban II which aim to help redress the imbalance in London's economy, increase social inclusion and create employment opportunities throughout London.

At an event held in March by the Government Office for London's European team  highlighted the critical role sustainable development has to play in all work undertaken with these funds. The sustainability event was held to coincide with the launch of the final bidding rounds for Objective 2 and the revision of the Co-financing Plans for Objective 3, to raise awareness and understanding of the increasing importance being attached to sustainable development, and the influence it will have on how the remaining funds are spent.

*Liz Meek, the Regional Director of GOL and Chair of the London European Programmes Committee said:

"This event highlighted many of the key issues relevant to sustainability in London.  The use and investment of European Structural Funds continues to show a positive difference to small businesses and quality of life in the areas involved.   Increasing the awareness of sustainability and European funds available through different schemes can only go to ensure Londoners benefit further".
