Refugees into Jobs
Set up in 1997, Refugees into Jobs helps
refugees and asylum seekers living in Brent and Harrow into
jobs by offering them better access to training and employment
opportunities. They provide training, assistance with job
search, voluntary work experience placements and clinical
attachments with local hospitals for medical personnel.
The success of the service speaks for itself - 90% of clients
on the voluntary placement scheme have gained full time employment
as a result of working as a volunteer and improving their skills.
Since Refugees into Jobs was set up six years ago, over 2000 clients
of 64 different nationalities have been assisted, with over 35%
getting a job. With funding from the European Social Fund, European
Refugee Fund, EQUAL, its local Health Action Zone and the Home Office,
the agency is confident that it will be able to expand and enhance
its service. It is hoping to build on its success through its Outreach
programme and initiatives like the Medical Journal Club, which was
established in 1998 to help refugee doctors re-qualify and find
work in the UK.
Government Office for London administers the Structural Funds on
behalf of the European Union and helps to make sure projects such
as these get the support they need.
