London Housing Conference
It’s not often
that two government Ministers attend the same conference.
But that’s just what happened on 10 March when both Lord Rooker,
Minister for Housing, Planning and Planning, and Tony McNulty,
Parliamentary Under Secretary for Housing, Planning and Regeneration
and Minister for London, joined the 200+ housing professionals,
tenants representatives, local and central government officers
and others at the London Housing Conference at Congress House.
Sponsored by Government Office for London, the Association of London
Authorities and the Greater London Authority, this was the main
consultative conference for the London Housing Strategy 2003.
Lord Rooker gave the keynote speech outlining how the Government
is aiming to transform our communities through the Action Plan set
out in the "Sustainable Communities: building for the future"
launched by the Deputy Prime Minister in February.
By far the most popular of the four workshops
at the Conference was the one on increasing the supply of
affordable housing. However, the most lively discussion took
place in the Decent Homes and Regeneration Workshop and some
useful points came out of the other workshops on Homelessness
and the Private Rented Sector.
Tony McNulty dropped in on the workshops to hear first hand
about the main issues that delegates were concerned about
and want to see incorporated in the London Housing Strategy.
He then chaired a closing question and answer session with
a panel of housing experts against a background of the main
points that had emerged from the workshops projected on to
a giant screen.
