New GP Surgery opens for West Ham & Plaistow New Deal for
Community Residents
Minister for London, Tony McNulty, opens the new surgery
Residents in West Ham & Plaistow now have a new GP surgery.
The New Deal Communities Partnership has teamed up with Newham
Primary Care Trust, Community Housing Association and doctors
Farzana Hussain and Petre Jones to bring a much needed new
facility to the area.
The NDC grant that helped to pay for the new surgery was
approved by Government Office for London.
Based in a refurbished house in Plaistow, the new practice
promises to be user-friendly.
Petre and Farzana place their emphasis on listening to patients
and helping them to make informed choices about their health and
lifestyles. The doctors want to run a friendly surgery that offers
a personal service. Appointments will be longer than usual, giving
the doctors a chance to get to know their patients and vice versa.
Farzana commented:
"We want to be able to remember our patients' names
and their family details so that a mutual trust is developed".
To ensure that this service is maintained the new practice
will limit its patients to a maximum of 3000.
The informal and friendly approach is mirrored in the building
itself, with work by local artists on the walls and a garden
maintained by local residents. The doctors and other practice
staff encourage patients to link with community groups as
they strongly believe that health is more than not having
an illness.
The surgery will offer a range of services including heart disease
prevention, diabetes clinic, counselling, family planning and drug
abuse treatment. These services will be expanded in response to
patients needs over time.
Also of great importance to the NDC area in the longer term, the
practice will help to train the next generation of GPs. This is
vital as 40% of Newham’s GPs are expected to retire over the next
five years. The practice will help to fill these vacancies with
locally trained GPs already familiar to the area and the opportunities
that it offers.
